The last thing an Ohio family expects to hear when a young person leaves home to start a new job is that their loved one was killed in a tragic incident only weeks later. Nevertheless, this is the reality that the loved ones of a 22-year-old intern are facing after she was killed by an escaped lion at the zoo where she was working. The woman, a recent graduate of Indiana University, began her job at the North Carolina zoo only two weeks before the incident on Dec. 30, 2018. The worker was participating in a routine cleaning of an animal facility at the Conservators Center zoo in Burlington, North Carolina. According to the zoo, she was part of a husbandry team working with a professional animal keeper to perform cleaning and maintenance on an enclosure. During the cleaning, the lions were to be kept in a locked space. However, one lion escaped from this area, coming into the enclosure during the cleaning and attacking and killing the intern. After the intern was killed, Caswell County sheriff’s deputies shot the lion, killing it. In a statement, the zoo said that it was not aware of how the lion had escaped from the area or whether any negligence was involved. It announced that it would be closed to visitors until further notice. Conservators Center receives around 16,000 visitors every year to see its collection of over 80 animals, including 20 big cats such as lions, tigers and leopards. An Ohio judge dismissed Facebook from a lawsuit filed by the family of a man whose killer shot him and shared the video on the social media site. The victim’s family had accused Facebook of acting negligently for not spotting and then reporting the posted threats by the shooter. The shooter shared the video of himself shooting the 74-year-old man on a street in Cleveland. His video remained live on the site for around two hours, and it was shared and viewed millions of times during that period. A few days later, the shooter also shot and killed himself following a police chase in Pennsylvania. Despite the role of Facebook postings in the incident, a judge in Cleveland said that the social media giant couldn’t be held responsible for the murder. Man’s family sues sheriff’s office after fatal crash

The family of a 77-year-old Franklin County man that was struck and killed in a car crash in July of 2015 has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against both the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office and the officer alleged to have been responsible for his death. The officer is believed to have been responding to a call to backup another officer immediately prior to striking the man’s car. The police report prepared in this case highlights how the deputy sheriff in this instance drove his police car at speeds in excess of 100 mph. He had been called to back up another deputy who had detained a drunk driver right outside of Columbus at the time. Somewhere along his way, he collided with the decedent’s van, causing an impact that resulted in the man being ejected from his vehicle. Prosecutors with the Franklin County District Attorney’s Office reviewed the case, but ultimately decided to not file criminal charges against the officer for the man’s death. A Columbus man crosses into oncoming traffic killing 1

A fatal car crash that claimed the life of unidentified Toyota driver in the early morning hours of Thursday, May 11, 2017 is under investigation by the Columbus Police Department. A preliminary investigation into the accident seems to point to the driver of the other unidentified vehicle as having crossed the center line into the westbound one. This resulted in a head-on collision with the deceased. The accident occurred at approximately 3:39 a.m. The 33-year-old and his 32-year-old passenger were riding eastbound along East 11th Avenue near its intersection with Ohlen Avenue at the time. It’s believed that the unidentified Toyota driver died right away as a result of the impact. As for other two men, they were both transported from the scene to Grant Medical Center. They were listed as having been in stable condition upon their arrival there. Lake Hospital System has been named as a defendant in a wrongful death lawsuit by the wife of a patient who died from acute intoxication from opioids and benzodiazepines. The prescribing doctor, an occupational medicine specialist, is also named as a defendant. The lawsuit, which was filed in Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court, seeks unspecified damages in a jury trial for funeral and burial expenses, loss of support, mental anguish and loss of prospective inheritance. Her attorney believes that “this is a multimillion dollar case.” In 2010, the woman’s husband suffered a back injury at work. He was treated at the LakeHealth emergency room in Willoughby. The physician prescribed opiates to the man, and according to the woman’s attorney, for too long of a time and did not spot or treat the man’s signs of addiction. Lake Hospital System, Inc., according to the lawsuit, did not “recognize a rampant prescription overdose crisis” in Ohio. As a result, Lake Hospital System, Inc. failed to create and implement proper opiate prescribing procedures for its employees and agents.” In addition, the attorney says that the hospital system should have realized that the physician was not experienced in “pain management prescribing knowledge.” The man was on prescription opiates for five years. The physician doesn’t work for the medical system any longer, but is now the director of laboratory services for Signature Health.
