Dehydration and malnutrition are serious issues in nursing homes

On Behalf of | Jul 6, 2016 | Nursing Home Neglect |

Your loved one has lived a long life and now has to turn to a nursing home to help carry out daily life tasks. Nursing homes are often looked at as a safe haven for the elderly. However, that is not always the case. When your loved one is placed in a nursing home where negligence and abuse occur, swift action is necessary to prevent your loved one from suffering further injuries.

We know that you probably never thought you would have to deal with a nursing home that wasn’t treating your loved one properly. When you went for the initial tour of the nursing home, it probably seemed like a good fit for your loved one. If you have been thrust into a nightmare stemming from the abuse or neglect of your loved one, you might not know where to turn. We can help you to explore your options.

There are two potential effects of neglect — dehydration and malnutrition — that can be particularly injurious to elderly residents. The effects of dehydration are often noticeable fairly quickly because your loved one’s health will be impacted. The effects of malnutrition are harder to notice, but can be just as devastating.

If someone — particularly someone who is older, frail and sick — is deprived of proper amounts of food and water, he or she could die. That will occur faster without water than it will without food. In either case, swift action is necessary to help ensure that your loved one gets the needed to get back on the road to recovery and that those responsible for this neglect are held legally responsible.
